How Do You Get More Engaged Volunteers? Engage Your Volunteers

It probably comes as no surprise that a nonprofit’s interaction with their volunteers, the horse-power pulling them along, is a two-way street. Unfortunately even the best nonprofits wonder how to get more engaged volunteers but do nothing about it.

Volunteers often come and go, or only work part-time, but the fact remains that volunteers are people so dedicated to your cause that they sacrifice their time and energy to seek you out and work—for free. If you don’t engage volunteers, what’s to stop them from packing up next weekend and going to one of the other hundreds of nonprofits down the street?

Engaging your volunteers is critical, and will help to keep them coming back for more. Here are a few tips: get feedback from your volunteers by talking with them after events or asking them to fill out short surveys. Next, you don’t need to take them out for dinner and a movie, but you should talk to your volunteers. Ask them about their lives, be positive and connect. Finally, foster an open, supportive and communicative culture around your own workplace. When you make your volunteers happy, they’ll make you happy.
